Statement of the Human rights, Equity, Anti-Racism, and Diversity (HEARD) Committee of the Empire State Campaign for Child Care

In light of the recent politicized attacks on Developmentally Appropriate Practice in early childhood education, the Empire State Campaign for Child Care reaffirms our commitment to our Human rights, Equity, Anti-Racism, and Diversity Statement and Guiding Principles. ESCCC is committed to uplifting and amplifying the voices of those most harmed by systemic racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, poverty and other injustices, many of whom are children. We unconditionally reject marginalization in all forms and demand the institutional change necessary to dismantle systems that perpetuate injustice and inequity.

These political attacks seek to bring us backwards. They seek to erase decades of contributions and expertise of BIPOC early childhood educators, undermine the urgency of dismantling systemic racism within the systems that impact the lives of children and families, and target the safety of LGBTQIA+ and specifically trans individuals who are valued members of our child care community.

Culturally relevant, developmentally appropriate practice that recognizes the dignity and humanity of each and every child, family, and educator is central to our vision of universal child care for New York State. We will continue to advocate for a world where every child, family, and educator is seen for who they are and receives the support they need to thrive.
